Fear and Loathing for the "I" Word

Saying the word impeachment in some circles is like farting aloud. It has a stunning effect. We need to re-educate ourselves and our loved ones. We especially need to educate our political leaders and elected representatives, who are failing to do the job they were elected to do.

Impeachment is the constitutional remedy for really bad government, the kind we have now.
It was never meant to be a public humiliation for failing to restrain one's libido or a tool of partisan politics. That was an abuse of the impeachment process.

When a government is without scruples, breaks the law and is directly or indirectly responsible for the unnecessary deaths and maiming of hundreds of thousands of people, it is flawed reasoning to think we should wait for the next election.
It's an especially bad idea if you have an election system like ours that fails to meet international standards for fairness and transparency.

When a president ignores the US Constitution, publicly confesses to crimes, puts himself and his administration above the law, restricts our civil rights, tortures, and makes war at will, legislation is not the answer. A lawless president will simply ignore any legislation that congress passes with say, 1200 signing statements?

Congress can tighten the purse strings but they are not.
According to Sy Hersh, the White House have a secret stash (my bet is on the poppy money from Afghanistan). They have all ready been using it to fund black ops in Iran without the consent of congress.

Impeachment does not weaken the nation, it weakens the bad boys.

It isn't time consuming. Senator Murray, who was sent to Olympia to try and suppress a Washington State resolution for investigation leading to impeachment, has a very short memory. She claims impeachment takes at least a year. The impeachment of Clinton took 4 months. Most of the work is done in committee. Much of the research and investigation has been done by frustrated journalists. A few subpoenas and Bob's your uncle.

The Democrats, aside from a handful of noble souls like Feingold and Kuchinich, are agin' it.
They say it will cause division within the Party. Give me a break. Unifying the Democrats on any given day is like herding cats. There never has been or will be a more fractious group. It's what the Democrats always say when their motives are suspect and their position is indefensible.

There is endemic disunity in the Democratic Party. But that has nothing do with this issue. Until the powerful but useless DLC jump ship for the soulless hulk of the GOP, they will continue to be at odds with everyone else.

It won't disrupt domestic legislation to begin an investigation, unless the Democrats have made the backroom deal from hell. Perhaps they agreed to leave Georgie alone in exchange for GOP support on domestic legislation. If that is the case, that will have to be renegotiated. A working constitution and the rule of law are not on the table. To even think that popular domestic legislation is a fair trade for the fundamental underpinnings of democracy is to have succumbed utterly to beltway madness.

It won't prevent the Democrats from stopping the war because they are not seriously involved in stopping the war. Non binding resolutions do not stop wars. Taking chunks out of Murtha's bill to protect the integrity of our military and lives of our soldiers isn't stopping the war. Signing on to a projected and incredibly foolish attack on Iran isn't stopping the war. Refusing to cut funding isn't stopping the war.

So let's get on with it folks. Investigation and impeachment aren't scary. They are liberating.
