Democrats Take a Stand on Abortion----Sort Of

After putting women’s reproductive health care in serious jeopardy by helping the GOP usher in a Supreme Court dominated by extremist-corporatist judges, the next to useless DC Dems have finally confronted their squeamishness on the issue of abortion.

Their over paid and under performing consultants have told the DC Dems that being called fetus killers by ignorant, opportunistic and semi hysterical ideologues is just too hurtful. They have decided that Democrats should concentrate their efforts on “the front end”.
Alexander Bolton writes this in “The Hill”;

"The Senate Democratic leadership says it has found a wedge issue to strengthen the party’s position on abortion rights, which top strategists think has become a liability in recent years.

The wedge is legislation expanding access to contraceptives and sex education, which polls show a majority of Americans support but which Democrats are betting will be difficult for social conservatives in the Republican base to accept.

Democratic strategists say the time is right for action because women who support abortion rights but are not politically engaged are alarmed by the confirmation of Samuel Alito as Sandra Day O’Connor’s replacement on the Supreme Court and by the passage of legislation strictly curbing the availability of abortion."

What’s wrong with this picture? What is it about the Democrat's “Aha” that leaves us scratching our head?"

Well for one thing, the vast majority of Americans support access to safe abortions and most of them are very engaged.
Before Democrats fell on their swords, they used to vote Democratic.

Have the Democrats in their feverish dithering forgotten about NARAL and NOW and Planned Parenthood? Have they forgotten that 54% of the people in this country are women?

Why are the Democrats always sniffing after voters who don’t like them?
At the same time they are throwing good resources after bad going after the mythical swing voter, they are pissing off their base no end.

How is this a good idea?

While access to information and birth control are important components of women's heath care, isn’t ignoring access to safe abortion rather like buying a canoe without the paddles?

Women don’t always become pregnant by choice.
It isn’t always a wild fling and that extra glass of wine that right wing idiots think women and not men should pay for by assuming the considerable risks of pregnancy, birth and 20 plus years of child rearing. A variety of tragic circumstances can be involved.

What if she can’t persuade the rapist or her Uncle Charlie to wait while she inserts her diaphragm or "her partner" doesn't care that she forgot to take her pills?
What if they don’t believe in using condoms?

What if some hopped little pharmacist decides to practice medicine and she can’t get the morning after pill in time?

Clearly their parsing of reproductive rights shows DC Dems to be without a shred of conviction. There is something cold and conniving in their manipulative nit picking that is more likely leave voters feeling ignored and uninspired during the midterm elections.

Throwing in the towel on abortion after running on “saving the Supreme Court” in the last election is unforgivable.

It is unlikely this sop will do much to restore trust in Democrats after that massive betrayal.

It is, instead, a brutal reminder of the Democrat's abject weakness and their tragic inability to stand for anything.
