Hooked on Torture
Articles have been circulated about Bush’s formative years, showing a proclivity for sadism. He is purported to have tortured frogs.
Lots of kids do horrible things. For a brief time, we pulled the legs off of Daddy Long Legs spiders.
But sense and an identification of our small lives with those of other living things won out and our experiments in shameful cruelty did not continue. Our hologram president obviously has not managed to cross this threashhold of mature, responsible thought.
Later in his life we hear that Bush was involved in a scandal that involved branding his naked frat house brothers with a coat hanger. He shrugged it off as a prank. But there is a disturbing connection between that episode in his early liquor besotted years and the piles of naked, brutalized bodies in Abu Ghraib.
Is there a connection between his alleged early sexual exploits and the female interrogators smearing “fake” menstrual blood on the extra legal prisoners at Guantanamo?
Then there was Bush’s odd behavior before going on television to announce the Iraq invasion. I’ve Googled vainly for an archive of the footage shot by, I believe a BBC cameraman where Bush winked and joked and pounded his fist saying “Feels good” before unleashing the US military on a weakened nation with no WMDs. Thousands would and did die; 250,000 Iraqis and nearly 3000 Americans and more coalition forces. No serious person, no sane person behaves this way.
Torture is a highly personal act and a pathological act. It has nothing to do with national security except as a war crime.
Anybody with a lick of sense knows that it is not the way to obtain reliable intelligence, that denying prisoners any legal process means you are going to be torturing a lot of innocent people. Sadly, this has all ready happened.
It is an infection that spreads and destroys any system of justice within the country that countenances it.
So why do it? It’s a very personal choice made by some very sick people and ratified by a group of ignorant cowards.
The legislation that congress passed at Bush’s behest cannot stand up in a court of law or to constitutional review.
Illegality, like lying is part of the many faceted pathology of the Bush regime. They always go for the outlaw solution. They could invest in building our intelligence networks, in human resources to secure the nation but instead they populate our agencies with partisan hacks, destroy intelligence networks and fund water boarding.
They could defend our chemical and nuclear plants and our ports. But they’d rather fund gulags and extra judicial kidnappings to torture friendly regimes. Maximum violence, minimal legality.
When they are caught and they always are, they ask Congress to change the laws. This process has been done so often and so thoroughly that our constitution and laws have become polar opposites.
It’s a replay of Bush’s life in which his father would manipulate and placate so his son could avoid the consequences of his actions and be protected from the onerous task of learning responsibility.
If congress plays the role of a besotted father then the media are his over protective and morally deficient mother who lies for and cossets her defective offspring.
We are swept up in a Greek tragedy. For the time being we are the victims, made powerless by rank corruption and human frailty. That will change. The monster child who dances out his dark destiny in the halls of power cannot hide forever. His protective house of cards must collapse out of the sheer weight of the harm inflicted.
Exactly where this all going to end is a mystery. Undoubtedly the end will be tragic. Many have suffered and more will suffer, but somehow I feel it is the confused, tortured torturer masquerading as the president of the United States who will suffer the most. The child man who has spent six years dragging us into his own personal nightmare; a world of chaos and death. He will be reclaimed by the sickness he has infected the nation with.
There us a tremendous distortion in our lives. America has been stretched out of shape and twisted to another purpose. If you believe in physics; that every actions has an opposite and equal reaction, then you have to believe that the response will be sudden and violent and it is unlikely he will survive it.
