Excuses, Excuses
There is no doubt that the Democrats stepped in a pile of it when they voted to escalate the war crime in Iraq. They won’t be able to rub the stink off until our soldiers stop dying in Iraq. The Memorial Day weekend is only half over and 15 US soldiers have been reported dead. The number of injured and maimed is rarely reported.
It’s impossible to know how many more Iraqis have died needlessly. Sadly, those left to face the full force of US intransigence and folly are the young, the old and the poor.
The acceleration of the genocide in Iraq would be tragic enough if were the only consequence of the Democrat’s betrayal, but it isn’t. Caving in on Iraq gave Cheney’s deflated plans to attack Iran a great big dose of Viagra. The man whose oxygen starved brain sees a Jihadi behind every Bush has swung into high gear, busily cranking around manufactured intelligence and imaginary mushroom clouds.
Thanks to Nancy Pelosi, Rahm Emmanuel and AIPAC, he can start bombing Iran without saying a word to Congress.
The Democrat’s surrender also means our government can continue fomenting war in Lebanon, Somalia, the Palestinian territories and killing imaginary Al Qaida leaders in Afghanistan without any opposition from Congress.
The Democratic leadership, in it’s wisdom, has decided that being called “soft on defense” or being accused of “not supporting the troops” is more terrifying than becoming accessories to crimes against humanity.
No one in the DLC is going to have their front door kicked in and have their loved ones hauled off to Abu Ghraib. None of the Clinton Democrats are going to have their homes bombed or their children murdered by a nervous teenager with an assault rifle. Their families are not going to starve or die of water borne disease or exposure to low level nuclear waste, so why worry.
It’s impossible to believe that the Democrats are unable to think of a single way to defend themselves against proven liars.
Kucinich can. In his press conference, he said it’s absurdity to think that leaving our military in Iraq is supporting them. Of course it is. Why isn’t the rest of the Party piling on?
Democrats should be attacking the GOP for their gruesome agenda, their dishonesty and their incompetence. The Democrats have an admirable national security record. No Democrat allowed terrorists to attack our nation. It’s the GOP not the Democrats who own imperialist wars and death squads. The Democrats could eat Bush and Cheney’s lunch.
The Democrats should be attacking the GOP for destroying our military and for systemically cheating our soldiers of needed equipment, medical care, benefits, and competent leadership and for war profiteering instead of skulking in corners.
There are no believable excuses political or moral; only a bad smell.
Still every mistake, no matter how serious, provides a window of opportunity. The Democrats could regain their mandate to govern and there credibility if they quickly open impeachment investigations on Cheney and Bush, focusing on the reasons we attacked Iraq.
It will shift the balance of power to the Democrats so they can successfully introduce legislation to end the war and stop an expansion into Iran.
Then they should publicly apologize to everyone that voted for them last November and promise to do better. They can start by defeating unfair trade bills and opposing stealing Iraq’s oil.
