MR. PRESIDENT,

General McChystal has just reported that the US is failing in it's military mission in Afghanistan. As you know, this was predicted by most experts.
It's tragedy for families both here and in Afghanistan that you ignored their advice.
In his report, General McChystal did not request more troops. Perhaps he understands that increasing our military presence is the wrong response. Contrary to your rhetoric, the Taliban did not attack the US. Afghanistan's problems are social and structural.
These problems require a different approach. The only legitimate role for the US is to enable Afghanistan to rebuild itself.
There is no support in Afghanistan for the US supported central government and there no support among the Afghan people for a military occupation. Americans believe this is not a war worth fighting.
How you address the failure of your Afghan policy will determine will determine the future of your presidency. Are you going to be the president for UNOCAL and the PNAC brotherhood or are you going our president?
